Lake Natoma, CA - Sacramento State finishes 5th overall in the fastest event of the weekend. This is the highest Sac State has finished since winning event in 1999 and 2000 and is evidence of the speed the program is gaining overall.

As the smallest Varsity Men's 8 in the Grand Final, the Hornets had their work cut out for them. With an average weight of 166 lbs the Varsity 8 was made up of a varied mix of individuals.

The Varsity 8 contained:
4 lightweights
4 non-lightweights
1 'Freshman' (w/ previous rowing experience)
1 Novice (never rowed before this year)
2 Fourth Year Sac State Rowers
1 First Semester Sac State Rower
1 Athlete weighing in at 149 lbs
1 Athlete weighing in at 205 lbs

It is also noteworthy to point out that Sacramento State was the only team to make the Grand Final that did not have a Junior Varsity 8. Any coach will tell you that having a "Second 8" to train and compete with everyday is absolutely beneficial to the overall success of both boats. With a small team or only 8 Varsity Men and 1 Varsity Coxswain, these individuals had to push themselves everyday instead of being pushed by another boat.

Varsity 8 Lineup:

C: Lyndsay Smith
8: John Studebaker
7: Jon Hasenauer
6: Greg Specht
5: Mike Brandt
4: Dan Stokes
3: John Mason
2: Matt Taylor
B: Brian Russo
